Hello VSO…..Goodbye 40″ Television.

21 07 2006

I just returned home from a cycling trip around Normandy. Not only do I now have legs like tree trunks, I have received confirmation of my acceptance by VSO!

I have to attend some training courses over the coming weeks and will begin publicising the site and try to get some donations in during this time.

Further good news, in that we received our first donation without evening telling anybody about the website!

New Beginnings

4 07 2006

Here we go then, a new start for me and hopefully something worth a visit for you.

On Friday 7th July 2006 I leave my job as an IT Support Engineer for a new life, working for Voluntary Service Overseas. I have just returned from my assessment day at VSO HQ in Putney. Cross you fingers. If successful, I will be leaving to work for two years in either Asia, Africa or Eastern Europe. There are a lot of uncertainties right now but as the days progress, the picture becomes clearer. I won’t say too much right now, as I don’t want to tempt fate (I might not have been selected after all), but the day was very enjoyable.

Meeting other volunteers was a real eye-opener and certainly made me more resolute about wanting to go. My motivation is to do something good, to share my knowledge with others and help VSO attain some of their goals of helping to reduce poverty in the developing world. I am not sure what shape this will take as yet, but I would like to end up teaching.

I should hear within a week so unless something remarkable happens between now and then, expect a post somewhere around the 20th July when I arrive back from holiday and open the letter which should be waiting for me.
